2.Tread Machiya A residential and commercial building whose narrow facade faced the street but whose floor plan extended far back in keeping with the shape of the lot. In large Japanese cities, this form of building was not sustained in the modern era, as the completely freestanding single-family home with a garden had become the new ideal.

Rather than keeping the staircase to a minimum, this project proposes a space that is like living with a staircase by making it larger. From the entrance to the living room, dining room, kitchen and children's room, the space is connected by a small staircase (227.8 x 202.5 x 750 mm) and a large staircase (455 x 405 x 2,570 mm).
