USS Borie had been the ultimate in destroyer design. She was fast – capable of up to 35 knots (40 mph) and well armed for the time with four 4” guns, a bank of 21” torpedo tubes and depth charges. By 1943, though, she was showing her age. Borie and her sisters could keep up with the new Fast Carriers in terms of speed but little else.
