Oct 3, 2008 · On May 18, 1969, USS Drum (SS-228) arrived under tow at Battleship Memorial Park. She was opened to the public on Friday, July 4, 1969 and became the nation's first submarine to be on permanent display as a museum.

When the range to the target was 2900 yards, angle on the bow 20° S., the target zigged toward the Drum, showing a zero angle on the bow, offering an excellent down the throat shot, since the inboard port escort prevented maneuvering for a stern tube shot.

The Drum attacked the leading ship from its port bow, going inside the escort undetected. Until the attack was made, the escorts echo-ranged on 16-20 kilocycles, using automatic keying, often shifting frequencies.
