The M19 Mortar is a light, smoothbore, muzzle-loading, high-angle-of-fire weapon for light infantry support developed and produced in the United States. It has been replaced in service by the more modern 60 mm M224 mortar, which has a much longer range and improved ammunition.

The M-19 Maschinengranatwerfer is a German 50 mm mortar which was used during World War II. The mortar was developed in 1934 for the purpose of defending permanent military bases. It had a maximum rate of fire of 120 rounds per minute and a range of 750 metres.

The mortars are smooth-bore, muzzle-loading, high angle-of fire weapons. The 60-mm mortar M2 and the 81-mm mortars M1 and M29 consist of a tube and base cap containing a fixed firing pin. WW2 U.S. M19 60mm PARATROOP MORTAR (non-firing display) U.S. Marine Raider and Army Airborne units benefited from a light 60mm mortar assembly rushed to the front in 1942. Roughly a 20 lb. mortar, this allowed a savings of 25+ lbs. over the standard M2 mortar, and allowed for more ammo to be carried.

Oct 10, 2017 · The M19 was a company-level weapon for U.S. and South Vietnamese marines, filling the indirect-fire gap between the M79 grenade launcher and the 81 mm battalion-level mortars. Never as popular as its M2 predecessor, the M19 gave way to the M224 60 mm mortar by the early 1980s.

The M2 and the M19 were used by Rangers and Marauders in WWII and Korea. They had a range of 1850 – 2100 meters. The M224 replaced these earlier models. At 3490 meters, it can fire a round much farther than its predecessors. The M224 consists of the barrel, combination base cap, and firing mechanism.

The M19 60mm mortar (the US equivalent of the British 2" mortar) was developed during WWII for infantry-level support operations to provide a reusable high-fire small arms system to replace the of M2 mortars.
