L1, L2, and L3 are collinear with the axis connecting the two massive bodies, with one between them and the other two on the outside. In the Sun-Earth system the L1 point is between the two massive bodies. L2 is past the Earth, and past the Sun is L3.
L1 is one of five points in space around the Earth and the sun called Lagrange points. L1 is located about 1.5 million kilometers between the Earth and the sun. It is the point where the gravity between the sun and the Earth is balanced. In the Sun-Earth system the L1 point is between the two massive bodies. L2 is past the Earth, and past the

After launch, the spacecraft traveled to a point about 1.5 million kilometers (just under 1 million miles) from Earth where the gravities of Earth and the Sun are balanced: the Lagrange 1 point, or "L1."

The L1 point afforded Genesis an uninterrupted view of the Sun. The spacecraft arrived there in November 16, 2001. Genesis occupied what scientists call a "halo" orbit, meaning that it orbits around an empty point in space, not a physical object.
the students conclude by reading the Student Text, “L1 or Bust,” where planetary motion. they learn about the Lagrange Points and study the trajectory that is used by the Genesis spacecraft during its trip to orbit L1 and back to Earth.

Flying a spacecraft to a halo orbit around the L1 point, opening it up, collecting solar wind particles in bulk as well as selectively from three regimes specified by the principle investigator, closing it up, and returning it to earth so the collected samples may be analyzed is a very special mission.
Destination L1: A Thematic Unit What a Trip! STUDENT ACTIVITY 1. Think back to a time when you had a great experience. It could have been something as simple as a picnic at a park or a walk with friends. Write a short paragraph about the trip giving such details as the destination, when it happened, who was involved, and what made this trip ...
