Mar 19, 2024 · Soy does mean I am, but in that Spanish is a pro-drop (pronound-drop) language. Meaning that when using the conjugated form of a verb the pronoun is inferred. So yes soy does mean I am on its own, but that's because saying soy is the same as saying yo soy. Idk if I explained it in a way that makes sense, but hopefully that helps 😊

Jan 9, 2022 · So, in Old Spanish it was so, do, vo, and esto. In the 1300-1400s this changed to soy, doy, voy, and estoy. There are a few theories why, but so started becoming soy first, and the others followed either because of similar shift of their own or just by comparison. No one has figured out exactly why the change happened
