Mar 19, 2024 · Soy does mean I am, but in that Spanish is a pro-drop (pronound-drop) language. Meaning that when using the conjugated form of a verb the pronoun is inferred. So yes soy does mean I am on its own, but that's because saying soy is the same as saying yo soy. Idk if I explained it in a way that makes sense, but hopefully that helps 😊

Mar 8, 2013 · In many cases the pronoun e.g. yo is redundant, but sometimes it's absolutely vital. A person mentioned that sometimes it's needed for clarification when 1st and 3rd person conjugations are the same as is often the case with the subjunctive (sea, tenga, etc.).

Yo soy alto (inteligente, moreno, etc.) Subtly different: once again, I am specifying a characteristic of mine, but I have put some emphasis on the subject, by mentioning it when it is unnecessary. By putting more importance on the subject, I am making it stand out.

“Yo soy” wouldn’t be incorrect, but redundant, unless you’re really trying to emphasize “I”. Duolingo probably does it to help beginners. Reply reply

Jan 9, 2022 · So, in Old Spanish it was so, do, vo, and esto. In the 1300-1400s this changed to soy, doy, voy, and estoy. There are a few theories why, but so started becoming soy first, and the others followed either because of similar shift of their own or just by comparison. No one has figured out exactly why the change happened

May 28, 2021 · The example they gave was Estoy vs Soy They explained that estoy implies a temporary state. Where as soy had the implication that the state was more permanent in nature. I am running (Estoy). I am a teacher (soy). So in my mind i have understood soy == always and Estoy == right now.
