Zhen Zhang (M’88–SM’91–F’04) received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in mathematics from Nankai University, Tianjin, China in 1969 and 1980, respectively, and his Ph.D. degree in applied mathematics from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, in 1984.

The Zhang lab conducts research at the interface of Chemistry, Biology and Medicine. Our work spans multiple disciplines, including synthetic organic chemistry, biochemistry, cell biology and drug design.

In the USC, Dr. Zhang’s group are very interested in developing innovative technologies to systematically dissect post-translational modification (PTM) enzymes essential for life-threatening diseases and identifying novel therapeutic targets and drug inhibitors.

A central theme in my research program at USC is to exploit the strong covalent force to rapidly discover potent and specific ligands for a large number of proteins from diverse families.

At Zhen Zhang Lab, we specialize in molecular biology and genetics. Our team is dedicated to advancing our understanding of the fundamental processes that govern life, including RNA transcription, protein synthesis, and epigenetics.
