Unlike most other Godzilla incarnations, Zilla himself physically resembles modern depictions of theropod dinosaurs, specifically dromaeosaurids such as Velociraptor and Deinonychus, with some inspiration from iguanas and crocodiles.

It was explicitly shown in the film that Zilla isn't a dinosaur, but rather a marine iguana (Amblyrhynchus cristatus) mutated as a result of nuclear tests. It is worth noting, however, that real life marine iguanas are herbivorous, whereas Zilla feeds primarily on fish.

Built like a theropod dinosaur with his body held horizontally on long legs, Zilla has a rectangular box-shaped head with a thick lower jaw - a "proud chin" - and long powerful arms similar to those of a spinosaurid.
