The M37 105 mm howitzer motor carriage (named T76 105 mm HMC during development starting in 8 July 1943 [2]) was developed by the US on an extended M24 Chaffee base, and was intended to be the successor to the 105 mm M7 Priest.

Jul 27, 2024 · The 105 mm Howitzer Motor Carriage M37 (HMC) represented a step forward in artillery technology, envisioned as the successor to the widely utilized M7 Priest sporting a similar 105 mm howitzer gun, but on the more modern M24 Chaffee chassis. Despite being adopted, the end of the Second World War curtailed the M37’s widespread utilization.

With these changes, standardization of the T76 as the 105mm howitzer motor carriage M37 was approved in January 1945. Although the end of the war limited the total production to 150 vehicles and none were shipped to the European or Japanese Theater of action.

The M37 was designed as a replacement for the M7. It was mounted on the chassis of the M24 light tank which gave it better mobility than its predecessor the M7 and mounted the improved M4 105mm howitzer. It had an open superstructure similar to the M7 and carried a .50 cal HMG in a raised gun turret.
